What a plant ID result can and can’t tell you — please read before acting on one.
Last updated: November 1, 2026
PlantIDOnline gives automated, photo-based plant identifications and general plant information. A result is a likely match, not a verdict. Please read this page before acting on any result.
Identification can be wrong
Results depend on photo quality, the part of the plant shown, the season and how common the plant is. Many plants have lookalikes — some of them toxic — that look almost the same in a photo. Always check the result against the real plant, and ask a qualified local expert when a decision matters.
Never eat or use a plant based on a result
Nothing on this site is permission to eat, brew, cook, apply to skin, use as medicine, feed to an animal or otherwise use a plant. Do not taste unknown plants. We do not identify mushrooms or other fungi.
Pet and child safety
Toxicity notes are general information and may be incomplete. “Non-toxic” does not mean a plant cannot cause a reaction, and “unknown” means keep it away until it is checked. If a pet may have eaten a plant, contact your vet or an animal poison-control service immediately. If a person may have eaten a plant, contact your local poison-control centre or emergency services immediately. Do not wait for symptoms.
Not professional advice
Content on this site is not medical, veterinary, legal or agricultural advice. Plant care and plant-health tips are general starting points. Before using any pesticide, herbicide or fungicide, follow the product label and local rules, or ask your local agricultural extension service.
Wild and protected plants
Leave wild plants rooted unless collecting them is lawful and necessary. Some plants are protected by law. Respect private land and local rules.
